Loxahatchee River Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Loxahatchee River is one of my favorite Florida paddling trips. It is the first of only two designated National Wild and Scenic Rivers in Florida. It is a popular canoe and kayak descent that retains a magical beauty and pristine quality surprisingly unaffected by the large numbers of visitors that tour the river daily.

In the 1990s, Larry Willis, then owner of Southern Exposure Sea Kayaks, and Eric Bailey of Canoe Outfitters of Florida, who rented canoes on the river, mobilized local volunteers to clean up the river, pulling up mounds of garbage, including pieces of car, washing machines, and tires, to restore it to the pristine river it is today."

The upper section of the river is fresh tannin-rich water flowing downhill without tides, and the lower section experiences weak tidal flow. If you intend to paddle the river to the sea, a good plan is to hit tidal water about half an hour after the time of high water at Jupiter Inlet.
Tidal Information
The dams can present hazards, so land to inspect them; if in doubt, portage. There are alligators on the river and regulations stipulate no swimming.
