Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail-Trail

Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail-Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The Jacksonville–Baldwin Rail-Trail is one big surprise from beginning to end. Running from the highly urbanized Jacksonville to the bedroom community of Baldwin, you would expect an urban trail with lots of noise and commotion. Nothing is farther from the truth!

This trail is downright serene. It travels through woodlands most of the way, with only a few houses at widely interspersed intervals. Even with I–10 only a few miles to the south, traffic noise is at a minimum unless the wind is from the right direction—and that’s rare for this area. Surface: Asphalt; 12 feet wide."

From 295 take Commonweath (exit 22) to IMESON and turn right to the trail head. Great quiet, well-maintained, straight, flat trail. At Baldwin there is an old train station where there are plenty of covered picnic tables and clean restrooms. By going west 1/4 mile thru a residential area to 301 there is an Everybody's restaurant which serves good hamburgers.

Your map to the start is WRONG. The trail starts on Imerson Road. It took us 45 minutes to find the start. Once were riding all was fine but PLEASE change the map for start from Jacksonville.

This trail is a hidden gem, only because there is not a lot of information printed.I rode this trail, and by the number of vehicles in the parking lot,so do many other's.The trail is very beautiful, flat, straight course, with many benches along the way,in case you just want to sit down, and relax. There is a bench approximately every mile on the trail, and near the 5.5 mile marker, there is also a restroom, that has water if you need a drink. From my ride,it appears that many people use the trail as a work out,but I also saw a family with a baby, and some elderly people.Although the tree's do not have leaf's on them,it was for the most part, very shady. If you are a resident of Jacksonville and or the nearby communities, this trail is a must do event. Not just once, but many, many times.

This is a great trail in an urban area. You really feel like you are in a quiet natural area as you ride. There are not many services, so you need to bring your own food and snacks when you ride.

For a rail-trail this is perfect. Serene, heavily treed, abundant wildlife, much of it through farm land. I use this trail for a great workout. It's 29 miles to the end and back. Near the city, yet so far away.
