Enjoy a walk through 300 acres on the Intracoastal Waterway in an otherwise developed area of eastern Duval County near Jacksonville Beach. Castaway Island Preserve offers concrete paths and a long boardwalk, plus an observation tower, to help you explore the human and natural history of this nexus of land and sea. Castaway Island Preserve is a jewel in the city of Jacksonville’s parks system—and it was about as expensive as a diamond. Situated along the west shoreline of the Intracoastal Waterway near San Pablo Creek, the 300-acre tract was the last tract of land available for park development between Atlantic and Beach boulevards. Castaway Island was purchased in the early 2000s for over $3 million, with several hundred thousand dollars used to develop the park facilities.
