West Lake to Alligator Creek Paddling Route Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Canoe or kayak across open bays and through mangrove-lined creeks and ponds. The entire trail is lined with mangroves, and the creeks and ponds are very scenic.
The entrance to the parking lot for West Lake is between Noble Hammock and Mrazek Pond along the main park road. A surface ramp, dock, picnic tables, and restroom facilities are available. There is also a short walking trail accessible from the parking lot (west side) that leads into mangrove habitat to an elevated wood dock overlooking West Lake. This is an excellent viewing station for a bonanza of ducks in wintertime. Fishing is prohibited from this dock.
When launching at the West Lake boat ramp, watch your footing because the ramp can be very slippery. This is an excellent paddle route as a day trip or to camp up to two nights (mid-November through late April) in a remote area along the aptly named Alligator Creek. Fishing can be excellent at times; the fish to target are spotted sea trout, snook, redfish, sheepshead, black drum, and mangrove snapper."
