Egmont Key from Anna Maria Island

Egmont Key from Anna Maria Island Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This trip includes a committed crossing of Passage Key Inlet to Passage Key and across Southwest Channel to Egmont Key. The tide passes through these channels and past the northern end of Egmont Key into and from Tampa Bay, which may make for
rough conditions, particularly close to the points of land when the tide runs against any wind.

Passage Key is a National Wildlife Refuge popular as a resting area for flocks of terns, wading birds, and diving birds, including black skimmers and pelicans. It has been the home of Florida’s biggest colony of sandwich and royal terns. It is closed to all public use."

Tides run swiftly in and out from Tampa Bay, where the flow is restricted, especially near Egmont Key. The roughest tidal areas can be avoided by keeping 0.5 mile to the east of Egmont Key as you approach until you are halfway along the island, and by avoiding the western side of the island during the ebb.
