Lee County (Central Portion) Professional Review and Guide

"The heart of Lee County is a hotbed of activity for saltwater enthusiasts. The Caloosahatchee River flows through downtown Fort Myers and connects to the lower parts of Pine Island Sound and Matlacha Pass at the coast. Redfish, snook, and tarpon are top targets for saltwater anglers throughout these waters. Boaters can motor up the Caloosahatcheee, cross through Lake Okeechobee, and connect with a canal that leads to the state’s east coast. And, you can fish along the entire route!

This eTrail covers 20 different fishing destinations in these Florida counties including Lehigh Acres Canals, Caloosahatchee River, Caloosahatchee River, Alva Access Area, Caloosahatchee River, Franklin Lock and Dam, Orange River, Tarpon Street Pier, New Edison Bridge, Centennial Park Pier, Jaycees Park, Cape Coral Bridge, Cape Coral Community Pier, Punta Rassa, Lakes Park, Cape Coral Parkway, Cape Coral Canals, Pine Island Sound and Matlacha Pass, Matlacha Pass Bridge, Cayo Costa State Park, Sanibel Causeway, and Sanibel Fishing Pier."

This is one of the better areas in Florida to do deep sea fishing. One reason is the warmer gulf waters, allows you to fish earlier in the spring and later into the fall. The other reason is it is much calmer on the gulfside. You are able to fish out of smaller crafts. I prefer to go into deeper waters for Grouper and Snapper. You can catch a cooler full on squid in an hour or so. There are many outfitters that you can go with for a day or two, or take your own boat. I seem to have better luck when fishing as a paying customer for some reason. A lot of the hotels in the area have special deals for guests. The only better fishing in Florida, in my opinion, is The Dry Tortugas off of Key West. Happy catching! :)
