Willow Nature Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This short trek wanders through a combination of wooded island swamp and hilly maritime hammock forest at Fort Clinch State Park. This state park on Florida’s northernmost barrier island also offers plenty of other activities to round out your experience, including a tour of the historic fort.

This hike is comprised of several interconnected nature trails meandering through wooded dunes and along a wetland. The hike begins in wooded dunes. Live oak, palm, Southern magnolia, and holly thrive above an understory of yaupon and palmetto. Spanish moss covers anything that doesn’t move. Ferns gain purchase in the fertile soil. You soon dip to a series of ponds, dug when the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) developed the park in the 1930s—not to retain water, but simply to acquire fill to elevate the park roadway."
