This trip takes you across the open waters of Chokoloskee Bay to historic Sandfly Island. In reality a horseshoeshaped shell mound, the island was engineered more than 2,000 years ago by the Calusa mound builders. Evidence suggests that it was an active trading site where men and women would have been making shell tools, constructing fishing nets, and producing the rich material culture that archaeologists are discovering at Calusa sites.
