Nature Boardwalk Everglades National Park

Nature Boardwalk: Everglades National Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Fakahatchee Strand, about 20 miles long and 3 to 5 miles wide, is the major drainage slough (pronounced “slew”) of the southwestern Big Cypress Swamp. It holds the largest stand of native royal palms and the largest concentration and variety of orchids in the United States.

Overall, the Fakahatchee Strand is considered to have greater natural significance than anywhere of comparable size in Florida. The trails once used to cut the virgin cypress here are used for self-guided hikes. Guided swamp walks—where you plunge into the midst of the cypress swamp and expect to get wet—are offered by the park and the Friends of Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve."
