Darwin’s Place

Darwin’s Place Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"NOTE: Darwin’s Place campsite has been closed due to vandalism. Check with a park ranger as to current use and availability. This route offers several historic venues and scenic waterways and you will paddle through Chevelier Bay. Jean Chevelier, a Frenchman, supposedly collected and stuffed birds while also pluming in the area in the late 1800s. It is rumored that he buried some treasure here.

As you paddle south you will be heading down the Wilderness Waterway. In about three miles you will arrive at Darwin’s Place, an old shell mound, where you can stretch your legs. Darwin is said to have been the last living person in this area, which dates back to the Calusa Indians. You will see a variety of fauna and flora along this route, including gumbo-limbo and buttonwood trees."
