East Main Trail Gate 12

East Main Trail (Gate 12) Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This is one of the most picturesque preserves in Florida, although there are those who may find it hard to envision a swamp as being picturesque.

Few people get to see the deep and foreboding interior of the swamp, but some of the deep sloughs are fascinating and intriguing. No matter how one feels about swamps, to explore the Fakahatchee is one of those memories that will remain with you for a lifetime."

My nephew and I hiked a little past the first three miles of the East main Trail, total round trip was 6.4 miles. The first two miles of the trail, which is an old logging road is well maintained and really just a very pleasant walk. We are still in the dry season so very little water along sides of trail. The easy portion of the trail ends at an old cabin next to a gator filled lake, great spot to photograph alligators! Past the cabin the trail is overgrown and looks like it isn't hiked much. We only went a mile before turning around but will push on further at a later time. Overall a great hike! Watch for gators along the sides of the trail and of course for snakes. If you decide to head off the trail make sure you have a compass or GPS so you don't get turned around.
