Lake Okeechobee Classic

Lake Okeechobee Classic Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This is the longest ride in the book, more than 100 miles. If you take it between the middle of May and the middle of October, you will feel that it is the longest ride of your life; it is very flat, and will be hot and windy. I recommend that you alternate riding the roads with the trail on top of the dike around the lake. Each has strong points. This is indeed a challenging ride, so keep your eyes open and let it all hang out.

Traffic and hazards: On the roads, the traffic will be light. Fast but light, with the occasional big truck. On the trail, there will be no traffic except for an occasional slow-moving maintenance vehicle. At the periodic nodes with boat ramps, facilities, and shelters, you must watch for traffic crossing the trail, but these points are easily identified in advance because the terrain is incredibly flat."

This trail, which is officially named the LOST or Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail is quiet and peaceful, but can be monotonous, especially at midday, when the light is flat and the wildlife is sleeping siesta. Not all of the route is paved. Paved sections include Port Myakka to Okee-Tanti and Belle Glade to Clewiston. Other sections are dirt or gravel, smooth enough for a wider-tired bike. I recommend riding in the evening from Port Myakka to Okee-Tanti and back. Time this ride to watch the sunset over the Lake on the way out and the full moon rise on the way back. At Okee-Tanti, stop in at Lightsey's restaurant for some fried alligator or catfish. Do this night ride in the winter. In the summer, the bugs are epic.

Great ride, but don't forget the hydration. There are long stretches where there are no stores and limited shade. If you are riding unsupported you need to be prepared for this.
