Florida Trail - Apalachicola National Forest: Vilas to Estiffanulga Professional Review and Guide
"This section of the FT traverses numerous environments and offers vertical variation. Leave Vilas and pass along the floodplain of the New River. Beyond here, the trailbed can be wet, as it passes through a full-blown swamp. Climb to higher, drier ground and come to pretty Bonnet Pond, ringed in cypress, and the Trail of Lakes.
Head through turkey oaks, then cross perennial stream Big Gully Creek and the cool swamp woods around it. Pass over dry hills and down into a juniper swamp, on to the crystal-clear Camel Lake, a National Forest recreation area and campground. Past Camel Lake, climb Memery Island, a sandy knob topped in live oaks. Finally, enjoy unique savannas—grassy wetlands where carnivorous pitcher plants thrive among widely scattered pines. Numerous potential camping spots make this section appealing to backpackers."
