Detailed Trail Descriptions from Our Guidebooks

    Peter Massey & Jeanne Wilson
"This spur trail leaves Death Valley West Side Road to travel a slow and bumpy path up the rocky, barren bajada on the east side of the Panamint Range. The formed trail travels steadily for 6 miles up the alluvial fan, or bajada, following alongside Johnson Canyon Wash. The hardy creosote bush is the main plant that manages to survive in the open, windswept area. After 6 miles, the trail descends to join Johnson Canyon Wash and the surface becomes slightly harder, rougher, and lumpier with some larger embedded rocks to negotiate. The canyon is fairly open. Its walls support sparse creosote bush and sagebrush. Special Attractions: Rugged trail that penetrates the Panamint Range up Johnson Canyon; Hungry Bills Ranch site. High-clearance 4WDs are preferred, but any high-clearance vehicle is acceptable. Expect a rough road surface; mud and sand are possible but will be easily passable. You may encounter rocks up to 6 inches in diameter, a loose road surface, and shelf roads, though these will be wide enough for passing or will have adequate pull-offs." Read more
