Junction and Breakwater Trail, Cape Henlopen State Park

Junction and Breakwater Trail, Cape Henlopen State Park Professional Review and Guide

"This hike passes through scenic Holland Glade, highlighted by a scenic overlook on a wooden bridge with views of marshland and the ocean in the distance. It follows a wide graded trail through coastal forest and farm fields. For many visitors to Delaware beaches, the stretch of Route 1 from Lewes to Rehoboth Beach gives the impression that Sussex County’s natural values have been completely overrun by commerce. Little do they know that the western reaches of Cape Henlopen State Park extend practically to the back lot of the stores along the strip. Hiding from the sounds of travelers and shoppers are glades, marshes, and pine forests leading all the way to the ocean. You can dodge the heat of the day along a trail that ducks in and out of pine-holly groves and hedgerows. You can skirt a cornfield and watch a hawk hunt among the rows. Best of all is the rest stop at the wooden bridge over Holland Glade. Special considerations: At the date of this publication, the Junction and Breakwater Trail was still in development. Plans show the trail eventually connecting with Lewes, making possible a long loop hike with a return using the Gordons Pond Trail. Check the Delaware State Parks Web site for updates."
