Follow the marshes along the Potomac River to Old Town Alexandria. Spend some time walking through the streets of this historic city before heading back on the Mount Vernon Trail. The hike can be done in reverse, but parking in Old Town is not as easy. If you start in Old Town, join the trail at Union Street and Jefferson Street, and head south. The 17-mile-long Mount Vernon Trail begins at the home of George Washington in Mount Vernon and parallels the Potomac River north to Theodore Roosevelt Island. This portion of the trail starts at the Belle Haven marina, where sailboats, canoes, and kayaks can be rented.
