Enter the forest at the trailhead, veering left up the rocky slope under the dense shade of eastern hemlocks on the white-blazed Appalachian Trail (AT). Cross Old Barn Road after 100 yards. Follow a switchback, then climb stone steps for a moderately steep ascent. Large red oaks dot this slope, which is marked by car-sized boulders. Follow the slope’s contour and watch for a colony of delicate maidenhair fern right after you pass through the remnants of a rock wall. Indian cucumber-root produces greenish-yellow pendant flowers here in late spring.
