Devils Hopyard Professional Review and Guide

"Ask a dozen locals how this park got its name and you’ll hear a dozen different tales. One legend claims that the numerous potholes at the base of Chapman Falls were created when the devil hopped with his hot hooves from one ledge to another, trying not to get wet. (Actually, the potholes are created as stones moving downstream become trapped in an eddy and spin around until a crater forms in the rock.)

A less intriguing story claims that a farmer named Dibble grew hops in the area, and Dibble’s Hopyard eventually came to be called Devils Hopyard. No matter how the name originated, the 860-acre Devils Hopyard State Park draws a multitude of visitors each summer who come to enjoy the pleasant picnic areas along the bank of the Eight Mile River and the 15 miles of hiking trails. Chapman Falls, at the northern end of the park, seems to attract the most attention from visitors. Here, the Eight Mile River crashes 60 feet over the rock escarpment to the calm pool below. A camping area on an access road north of the falls provides overnighters with a choice of more than twenty open and wooded sites."
