Mean tidal range is 2.3 feet. Aside from the more predictable north–south flood and ebb, tidal current floods west into Long Island Sound and east out of it. Fishers Island Sound is known for strong currents. Midday high tide works well; plan to have an outgoing tide help you on your way out, negotiate the potentially stronger currents of Fishers Island Sound around slack tide, and ride the incoming tide back up the river.
Tidal Information
Boats waiting at the drawbridge have limited maneuvering ability and are subject to the current; steer clear. There’s also plenty of boat traffic elsewhere on the river and in the sound. Fishers Island Sound is subject to open ocean conditions, and steeper waves when the current opposes wind. Be aware of tide changes and anticipate changing conditions.
