McLean Game Refuge Trail

McLean Game Refuge Trail Professional Review and Guide

"At 4,446 acres, the McLean Game Refuge is one of the largest parcels of conservation land, state or privately owned, in Connecticut. Its many miles of well-maintained trails lead through extensive hardwood forests, along fast-flowing streams, past lush wetlands, and to the summit of a hill created by lava flows."

The McLean refuge is one of the best trail systems in southern New England and I have covered most of them over the last 30 years. Here it is possible to put together an all-day hike without repeating trails. The Refuge is a micro-climate in places reminiscent of VT & NH with a noticeably lower temp in the summer. There are meadows, springs, brooks and some of the tallest hemlocks in CT. It is a place with trails where you will not see another soul despite being in a densely populated State. Great place for trail running.
