Devil’s Hopyard State Park

Devil’s Hopyard State Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"From the parking area, follow paved Foxtown Road left 300 feet to the campground entrance on the left (you’ll explore the falls at the end of this walk). At the far end of the guardrail on the right, cross Foxtown Road.

Traverse exposed bedrock to an unmarked, unnamed trailhead, amble downhill, and reach the junction with orange-blazed Vista Trail just before a wooden walkway over an unnamed brook. Turn left to follow the path upstream along the boulderstrewn brook to your right. Pass through tall mountain laurel shrubs—with gnarled trunks and shiny leaves only at their tops—as you make your way up the gradual slope under red maple, yellow birch, and red oak."

"At the heart of this 860-acre state park, find the tumbling streamers and dark-rock escarpment of 60-foot Chapman Falls. The park name traces either to the growing of hops (an ingredient for beer) or to a charming myth that explains the potholes at the foot of the waterfall as the Devil’s hoofprints, burned into place as he danced about to evade the falling water. This hike combines the walk to Chapman Falls with the Vista Trail, paying tribute to the Eightmile Wild and Scenic River, one of only two federally recognized waters in the state. The other is the Farmington. Currently, in all of New England, there are only eight federal wild and scenic rivers. More than 25 miles of this river’s main stem and feeder waters are protected."
