"A backpack from the Gila Valley to the Ash Creek Trail, 8.4 miles one way. This route follows old jeep trails into the northern end of the Pinaleños. It begins on a primitive road that winds upward across rounded bajadas around the mountains. Creosote bush and mesquite gradually give way to prickly pear cactus as the track gains altitude. The massive inner peaks of the Pinaleños are reflected in the north by the distant Blue Mountains. At the national forest boundary, the road becomes a rocky jeep trail that makes its way to the edge of a steep drop-off overlooking Shingle Mill Canyon."
