Byers Peak Professional Review and Guide

"Relaxing summer drive from popular Winter Park. Ends at Byers Peak Hiking Trail. Enjoy hiking, biking and camping. Many ATV trails. Mostly graded roads. Suitable for high-clearance, 2-wheeldrive vehicles when dry. Upper end is narrow and steep. Busy on weekends."

Byers Peak is a dramatic mountain near Winter Park; the trail is accessed via the Fraser Experimental Forest. Note that the dirt road to the trailhead has recently been closed two miles from the actual trail (so add an extra 4 miles RT to what the books say for length--the sign now says 9 miles RT to the peak). Trail goes for a long two miles uphill along the dirt road, then another long uphill stretch through nice forest, and then you finally break treeline. The rest of the hike is a beautiful climb along a spectacular ridge all the way to the top. A big of rock scrambling at the very peak. I saw six mountain goats wandering along the trail, unbothered by hikers.
