South Colony Lakes

South Colony Lakes Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This very popular trail ends at a pair of scenic lakes above the tree line. Access to routes to iconic peaks of the area, including Crestone Peak, Crestone Needle, and Humboldt Peak. From the trailhead, hike 2.5 miles to an intersection with Trail 1339. Take the left fork southwesterly.

Curve right (north), past the wilderness boundary, and continue climbing steadily into the upper valley. The trail enters the forest again and rejoins the creek below the lower lake. Here are the first good views of the very impressive Crestone Needle. Continue along the creek and then across it, using the stone stream crossing to get to the north side of the lower lake."

This Trail actually longer. vehicles have to park lower down and the round trip is probably about 8.2 miles. We camped for 3 nights at the campgrounds. The hike was actually strenuous for me, haven't been backpacking in over 30 years. We camped along side South Colony Creek. The altitude affected me a bit and took a day to rest with a short hike to the lakes. the second day I felt better and tried to summit Humboldt Peak but had to stop at the saddle, Altitude got me again. Got to see Goats, Marmots and chipmunks as well as a badger on the drive up . The goats actually came into camp. One of our fellow backpackers had his Tracking poles chewed up, apparantly the goats were trying to get the salt in the grips. Verizon Cell phone service actually has a good signal at the campsite
