Hermit Pass Road

Hermit Pass Road Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A rough road past a high lake to 13,000-foot Hermit Pass, with access to Hermit Peak, Rito Alto Peak, and Rito Alto Lake. This is a popular road that gets heavy use up to Hermit Lake during the summer months. Avoid weekends and holidays to escape most of the crowds.

From the intersection of CO 69 and CO 96 in Westcliffe, drive south on CO 69 for 0.3 mile; turn right (west) onto Hermit Road (CR 160). After approximately 6 miles, the road turns sharply to the right then back to the left. At this point the road gets rougher as it climbs for another 2 miles to the intersection with the Rainbow Trail (1336) on the right (north)."

"An in-and-out trail that climbs to remote Hermit Pass near 13,000 feet. Great hiking, camping and fishing along the route. Popular ATV area with access to Rainbow Multi-use Trail. Take short hike to interesting waterfall from Middle Taylor Creek Campground. Make sure to see rustic downtown Westcliffe. Many people miss the main part of town because it is located west of Hwy. 69. Rocky and rough but no major obstacles. Road is fairly wide all the way. Suitable for any high-clearance, 4-wheel-drive SUV."

I drove Hermit Pass Road in a 4x4 pickup, to just below the pass. Snow blocked the rest of the way. The road is unmaintained and very rocky resulting in a really bumpy ride. It took 1.5 hours to go 5 miles.

I hiked up to Hermit Peak, which affords awesome 360 degree views. I also hiked down to Hermit Lake and Horseshoe Lake, both beautiful.

Rough, rocky road. Alot to watch out for. Worth the experience when you reach the lake! Alot of good Colorado fishing!
