Rito Alto Creek

Rito Alto Creek Professional Review and Guide

"A long gentle trail to a scenic lake, this trail is well maintained and is popular with horse and llama trekkers and outfitters. When wet, the last mile to the lake can become very muddy and rutted.

Hike up the trail as it immediately crosses to the left (north) side of the creek and climbs gently up the narrow valley. Climb up the steeply switchbacking trail to a gentler stretch and past several small beaver ponds, then climb steeply again up to several open meadows on the right (south). At 5.5 miles the Cotton Creek Trail cuts sharply back to the left (north). Continue up the valley as it turns to the right (south) and follow the gently climbing trail to the lake. Good camping can be found near the upper meadow and around the lake; be sure to camp at least 300 feet from the shore."
