Red and White Mountain

Red & White Mountain Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A popular recreation area convenient to Vail and Avon with beautiful lakes and many great hiking trails. Hike beyond Piney Lake into the Eagles Nest Wilderness along the stunning Gore Mountain Range. Fun area to explore in an SUV—just enough roughness to make it fun, but not overwhelming. Ski area views and great fall color. Don’t miss the great overlook of June Creek Canyon. Western half of route has many marked narrow side roads, perfect to explore on an ATV. No parking immediately at start of trail; drive in a short distance. Piney Crossing Campground is popular with ATV riders; however, the campsite is small and spaces go quickly. The first part of route to Piney Lake is an easy, graded road. As you head west on F.S. 734 toward Red & White Mountain, conditions gradually deteriorate. The road south through June Creek is a narrow shelf road but has no major challenges. Suitable for stock, high-clearance 4-wheel-drive SUVs."

Very nice trail with some great views. The first couple of miles are very easy but gets much worst once you take the left to continue on this trail instead of going to the campground. We did it in a stock '11 Jeep Sport Wrangler without too trouble. Low 4WD is needed in several spots.
