Lost Lake

Lost Lake Professional Review and Guide

"Lovely wildflowers beneath groves of aspen are a treat along the way to this accessible high lake in the Gore Range. Here is a good, easy lake hike for the early season in the incredibly lush Eagles Nest Wilderness. The destination is one of many, so-called “Lost Lakes” in Colorado. (A shorter trail also reaches this peaceful lake from the east, via a spur off the Red Sandstone Road at mile 3.4 from the frontage road.) The route lies along a ridge, traversing through beautiful aspen groves and three open forested areas.

Beginning in mid June and peaking in mid July, the open understory of these aspen forests shelter gorgeous displays of mountain wildflowers; including columbines, lupines, larkspurs, paintbrush and heart-leaved arnicas. Because this is one of the easiest high lakes to reach in the Gore Range, the local camp robbers, including gray jays and Stellars jays, are used to visitors and will come looking for a handout."

Nice easy hike. Not enough forest covered canopy.

Great hike thru the woods. Lake is very pretty, surrounded by pines. The worst problem is getting to the trailhead parking. When you leave Sandstone Rd, the "700" road is a dirt road. You have to travel on a dirt road full of potholes for 6.4 miles. Do not leave the 700 road despite other directions. Trailhead is about 50 yards to your right at about 6.4 miles from the start of the dirt road (road forks, stay straight/right). We made it in our rental car but would have been easier in a larger vehicle.

This hike was just as described. We only ran into one set of mountain bikers on the way up and a couple of groups of hikers on the way down.
