First a correction. The part of the trail where the auther says is used by snowmobiles is incorrect. Motorized vehicles are not allowed this far west. You can see the signs marking where snowmombiles are not allowed jsut off to the east of the trail.

This is an awesome snowshoe trail. Very well marked and moderate in difficulty. We did this on a weekday afternoon. There were no snowmobiles on the trail of course and even to the east where they are allowed we didnt even see any. Very suprising since it was an absolutely bluebird day jsut after over a ft of new snow 2 days earlier. We only saw 2 other x-country skiers as well. We found this strange since the great snow, blue skies and warm weather (35-40f). Once you start to come around to the west a bit, you will see a couple of large powder fields. I only wish I brought my snowboard with me. 20-30 degrees steep of fresh pow fields several hundred yards long. They were untouched. Again very surprising since the conditions were so nice. It msut have been due to it being a weekday. I cant imagine those hills going untouched through the weekend...

Anyways, on to the peak. You will see Walton Peak to the south with some interesting 40 degree slopes on its east side. Maybe next yr :). On north walton peak you will see nice views of rabbit ears pass to the north and some other peaks all over. After lunch on the peak, instead of taking the trail back, from the peak we trekked due east and hit the powder fields. Would of prefered to have been on my snowboard, but it was still fun on snowshoes. Once we hit the trail, we took it to the north and followed the blue diamonds back to the parking lot. Great backcountry afternoon and a welcome break from Steamboat resort.
