"The Rio Grande, the second longest river in the United States, begins its journey in the Weminuche Wilderness of the San Juan Mountains as a tumbling mountain stream and, for Colorado trout-fishing purposes, ends about 70 miles later, just west of Del Norte. At its upper end is the Rio Grande Reservoir, below which it spreads out through meadows before hurtling through Box Canyon.
Below The Conejos River Valley below Platoro Reservoir. the canyon, the river is a succession of crashing rapids and, upon entering a long wide valley, a series of riffle-pool-run complexes all the way down to its confluence with the South Fork of the Rio Grande. At the town of South Fork, the river heads east into the agricultural lands of the San Luis Valley. Key Species: Brown trout, rainbow trout."
