Crater Lake Trail

Crater Lake Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This is one of the shorter hikes in the book, but the setting is so exquisite it is difficult to even begin walking. The view right at the trailhead is one of the most unforgettable in Colorado.

After a short stroll past Maroon Lake, we’ll take off on a trail through aspen and spruce to Crater Lake for an up-close experience of the stunning Maroon Bells. Come here in the fall when the aspen and the Bells try to outdo each other’s beauty. It is an absolutely fabulous hike and an all-time author favorite."

This hike is well worth doing if you want to absorb & see a bit more of the Maroon Bells area, whilst getting away from the swarming hoardes at the trailhead/Maroon Lake area. Some parts are a little steep and/or rocky, but nothing too strenuous at all. Also much of the trail is under cover through the trees. And once you arrive at Crater Lake at the top, you'll find your efforts are well worthwhile; it's a peaceful massive beautiful setting, where we found we wanted to spend some time just to sit and enjoy it for a while. Then hiking back down to Maroon Lake, there's some great 'reverse' views of it and the surrounding scenery. We did this hike at early evening in September, meaning the light and the foliage combined to put on a pretty special display of scenery for us. Highly recommended.
