Hiking through History Colorado
by Robert Hurst (Falcon Guides)
This mellow hike through forests and meadows above Nederland will take you back 100 years in 4 miles. The well-signed route takes you to the historic Blue Bird Mine and DeLonde homestead. “Can you imagine growing up here?” my dad asked as we took refuge on the porch of the historic DeLonde house in Caribou Ranch Open Space, looking out over the green meadows and sharp pine-covered mountains surrounding us.We were both shivering after getting caught in a very cold, drenching rain, and more of the same seemed to be rolling in over the hills. I imagined that growing up here would have been quite nice, but frequently challenging. No doubt living at the DeLonde homestead was pretty fantastic on mild, sunny days.

The trails of Caribou Ranch Open Space not only wind through excellent wildlife habitat, but also take you on a historic journey into the mining era of the 1870s, past an old homestead, and along a scenic railroad route of the early 1900s. During your hike, you’ll circle a beautiful meadow and learn about willow carrs and wetlands from interpretive signs at different overlooks. About 1.2 miles of the trail follow the gentle old railroad bed of the Switzerland Trail of America.
Easy trail surrounded by evergreens and aspens. Beautiful views for early winter. Nice outhouse facility [pit toilets] at trailhead with hand sanitizer. Lots of kid-friendly trail notes and self-guided activities. Plenty of other folks on the trail without being congested. Fun town of Nederland nearby. You can break up the trail several different ways for various lengths and time available. Historic buildings with interpretive signage. Benches and picnic tables well placed for making the most of day trips. Will go back again!
