Narrow Gauge and North Fork View Loop-Pine Valley Ranch Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This peaceful trail follows the North Fork of the South Platte River through a stunning valley framed by huge rock outcrops, and then around a peaceful mountain lake.

Perhaps a coyote will mark your progress from the meadow along the river. Perhaps a herd of elk will have gathered to graze on the abundant grasses. Perhaps you will see a hawk scanning the valley floor for prey. Or perhaps you will see no other creature at all, and simply walk in peace through a landscape sculpted by the South Platte River. Far removed from the city, solitude and high-country beauty are celebrated in Pine Valley Ranch Park. Pine Valley is more than a beautiful place to play outdoors."

My friend and I took our dogs on this one because it was near water plus it had very little elevation gain, which was perfect for me due to a hurt foot. The part of the trail that goes around the lake to the south of the river had people who seemed quite unappreciative of dogs swimming in the water, which can only be done sans leash. So we left that area pretty quickly. Maybe it was just some sort of weird coincidence of all dog-haters that day, but that was the most unfriendly place toward dogs I have been in this state. After we left that area, we went on the trail along the north side of the river, which was really level with areas where the dogs could get in the water along the way. We were the only ones on that side, which was great because our dogs were in and out of the river the whole time. The river was relatively slow-moving because it was in August, so it wasn't so swift that I was afraid my dog would get swept away. Might be too swift for dogs earlier in the season. No shade on the hike on the north side of the river. Don't forget bug spray on this hike!
