Balanced Rock Road(322) Professional Reviews and Guides

"A fun road that descends to a remote camp spot above Palmer Lake. Side road ends at wind-protected picnic spot at base of large rock outcrop. Views of front range from top of rock. Good ATV trail. Staging at start. Natural granite gravel road over roller-coaster terrain. East end narrows and drops steeply down to gate at reservoir for town of Palmer Lake. Suitable for stock, high-clearance SUVs with 4-wheel drive."

We drove this trail on a dry hot day. It was easy for our 06 xterra. The only mod we've mad is AT tires. At about 5 miles the road gets really eroded and is loaded with bumps and little ravines. After making it to the lake, I wasn't sure we would get back out. The area by the switchback is steep and imposing for newbs like us. It was easy though. 4w low pulled us right up. Overall, great easy trail. Enough bumps and tipping to scare beginners, but little real danger. Could get hard if it was raining.

12-16-06 The weather had been pretty dry and warm lately, so we decided to try a little off-roading. This seemed like a good place, and it was. Most of the snow was gone, and it was pretty nice. The guide lists this trail as "easy", and it would be in the summer, but the snow definitely pushed this into the high end of the "moderate" rating. It was fun, but leave yourself about 1.5 hours to get from Monument to the Rampart Range road along Mt. Herman road. I plan to do it again in better weather!
