Pros: Wildly beyond our expectations, we “trailer camped” in the RV section. There’s a lot of space between campsites, so you feel a sense of privacy and quiet. We stayed in the 1-22 section, and every sight has a spectacular view of the San Juan Mountains. I can’t imagine a nicer campground. We saw deer in the camp 3 out of 7 nights! The bugs were minimal, and the weather was gorgeous, but on the warm side during the day (mid 80’s). Cons: The only con was that the marina was closed for the summer of 2005. I gathered that there was a war between the owner and the park, and they were never able to work out a deal that satisfied both sides. So, the owner closed it, and I guess it’s up for sale. Although the marina was closed, there are so many other things to do in the region; fish, horseback ride, hike, hot springs, you name it. We’re definitely going back.
I spent the weekend at the park and after doing some trail work in the area, got to hike 2.5 miles of the Enchanted Mesa Trail. The first ascent via switchbacks is a bit steep, but very short and the view atop the mesa is spectacular. The trail winds above the reservoir and offers amazing vistas of the San Juans in every direction. A nice day hike for the campers in the park.
