Treasure Mountain Out-and-Back

Treasure Mountain Out-and-Back Professional Review and Guide

"The real treasure of the Wolf Creek area is the Treasure Mountain Trail. With its smooth surface and fast turns, this prime singletrack has much in common with the perennial favorites of Southwest Colorado, among them the Hermosa Trail and the section of Colorado Trail west of Molas Pass.

Better still, Treasure Mountain has somehow managed to avoid excessive use by mountain bikers, perhaps due to its slightly stealthy hiding place in the lonely backcountry east of Pagosa Springs. (Unfortunately, while being nicely untracked, it’s also quite a bit shorter than either of those other trails I mentioned.) The Treasure Mountain Trail’s amazing lack of painful, Colorado climbs and rough technicality keeps it accessible to novices, but the turns will be savored best by experienced riders. Trail Surface: 100% singletrack."

I started off of the east fork road side, with a long, long ascent to begin. pretty rough for me not being from Colorado. I saw some horse droppings, but I saw no damage at all from horses. The road was pretty rough at times, but well maintained. With absolutely no signage, I had no idea where I was, but trusting the maps got me up and back. This was a beautiful ride through aspens after aspens. Nice vista views. The only weakness was that it was relatively short, but with the uphill, all I needed.

Some horse packers have been up here when it was muddy and made a real mess of things. A real shame!
