Southern Loop

Southern Loop Professional Review and Guide

"This is a spectacular two- or three-day hike that takes you deep into the southern part of the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. This loop will take you to beautiful mountain streams, high alpine lakes, towering rocky peaks, and open flower-filled meadows.

Wildflowers grow profusely during the summer months, and the scenery is spectacular. Trail conditions: The lower part of the trail is maintained and well marked. The upper portions of the hike follow sections of steep, rocky tread."

Great Trail! First weekend in June the higher elevations were free of snow, however there was still quite a bit of snowpack in the trees which made trail finding a bit challenging. Quite wet (running water) in areas due to very rapid snowmelt. I did it in 2 days, staying at Devil's Thumb Lake on the first night. The lake was a magnificent and secluded place to stay (only 2 camping permits issued for this lake). On the second day except for the short morning hike up to the pass the rest of the trip was downhill. Great hiking in the tundra along the continental divide. Beautiful scenery, stunning views and amazing wildflowers at higher elevations. It was an awesome way to start the backpacking season. Definitely recommend this trail!
