Despite the write-up, the trail head is well-marked with a sign likely put up after the book was published. My friends and I only hiked about 1.5 hrs in, and there was very little shade in all that time, so I'm glad we did the hike in mid-September rather than mid-summer. The hike is in a valley, and while the surrounding mountains are aesthetically beautiful, the scenery doesn't change and the trail itself doesn't vary much from its texture or incline. Some hikers we met in the parking lot said they took a left at the beginning of the trail and made their way to Blue Lake, though we didn't see that turnoff. That hike was far steeper and wooded.
