Mount Herman and Rampart Range Road

Mount Herman and Rampart Range Road Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The trail starts in Garden of the Gods Park and climbs to Rampart Reservoir where you find great hiking, mountain biking, camping, boating, and fishing. Views are breathtaking at every turn. A convenient introduction to the backcountry around Colorado Springs. Great views of the front range, Air Force Academy, Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods Park. Unlicensed vehicles are not allowed on Rampart Range Road or Mt. Herman Road.

Just a few marked side roads are long enough to enjoy. (Exception: Rampart Range Recreation Area on north end of Rampart Range Road near Sedalia.) Maintained gravel road with occasional rocky spots and small washouts. Rampart Range Road, in the area around Rampart Reservoir, is suitable for 2WD cars, but as you descend towards Colorado Springs, the road gets very rough. Mt. Herman Road is rocky, steep and narrow in a few places but suitable for stock, 4x4 SUVs in good weather."

It was a nice drive to take my mom on. We seen lots of traffic in both directions. Could see the fire damage from a fee’s years ago. We also found a lost elderly lady that was looking for a baby shower. I assume she took a wrong turn.

We enjoyed taking our Jeep down this road! We didn't plan this trip it just sort of happened and we were happy that it did. Great Scenery! Easy drive nothing difficult about it.

If you are looking for a true off-roading trail, this is not it. It has OK view in parts and of course it ends in Garden of the Gods, but you could take ANY 2wd car down it. In fact, we met a Honda Civic, Subaru Impreza, Honda CRV and a Lexus! This is a well traveled dirt road, not a trail. If you are looking for a off-road trail to take your SUV on, choose something else. If all you have is your daily driver 2wd car, this is the trail for you.

This was so beautiful.. We started at Garden of the Gods and took it all the way to Woodland Park. The views were just wonderful. Great for a 1st time out, you can even take your car if it's a nice day.
