Gunnison Gorge

Gunnison Gorge Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Designated as wilderness in 1999, the BLM-administered Gunnison Gorge Wilderness Area encompasses some truly beautiful canyon country that extends north from the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Included in this area is one of Colorado’s more alluring river corridors.

So coveted is the run through this gorge that rafters go to the trouble of packing their gear into the canyon just so they can then float down the next several miles of river. Four hiking trails drop into this scenic canyon from the west rim. The longest of these routes, the 4.5-mile Ute Trail, offers as fine an introduction to the Gunnison Gorge as any. Currently, the Gunnison Gorge Wilderness encompasses 17,700 acres of prime canyon country."
