Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byway: Meeker to Yampa Professional Review and Guide

"The 82-mile-long Flat Tops Trail, a National Forest Scenic Byway, traverses the scenic upper White River valley and crosses Ripple Creek and Dunckley passes on the wild White River Plateau. The White River Plateau, part of Colorado’s plateau geographic province lies just west of the main bulk of the Rocky Mountains between the Yampa and Colorado rivers.

The eighty-two-mile-long Flat Tops Trail scenic drive, beginning in Meeker west of the plateau, follows the White River’s deep gash eastward almost to the heart of the Flat Tops before swerving northeast over Ripple Creek and Dunckley passes to the Yampa River’s broad upper valley.

Special attractions: Meeker, White River, White River National Forest, Routt National Forest, Flat Tops Wilderness Area, Trappers Lake, Ripple Creek Pass, autumn colors, fly fishing, hiking, camping, backpacking, and scenic views."

Gorgeous, verdant mountains. No wonder the Utes made it their home, and the white man snatched it away! Try to get some appreciation of the history of the area. Motorcycled it solo in Aug. '08. Next time, I'll take a friend. Forty miles of gravel (even well graded and maintained) ultimately can play mind games with you. The runs from Rifle to Meeker, and from Yampa to Wolcott, to get to and from the Byway, were relatively quick and painless. Worth the trip. Stop at the Wolcott Yacht Club if you finish near there.
