The Incline Trail

The Incline Trail Professional Review and Guide

"There is a vertical scar on a hill behind Manitou Springs. The trees part in a skinny stripe littered with aged railroad ties that climb steeply to the top of this small mountain. A railroad line was constructed on this slope in 1907 to aid in construction of a hydroelectric plant, and later used to take visitors to an overlook of the town.

Today, these are the proving grounds. If your competitive fire burns white hot, the Incline beckons. It will torment and punish you, then stoke that fire to come back for more. This path provides a grueling test of fitness, and unofficial record times to the top are well known and held in high regard. Just for fun, keep the number thirty in the back of your mind. Make the top under that many minutes and you can boldly brag to your buddies. Remember the feisty axiom of the Incline Club: “Go out hard. When it hurts, speed up.”"

The incline is definitely not something to be taken lightly. You need plenty of water, sun screen and I was thankful for my hat. You generally need to pay about $10 to park near the trailhead. I would suggest starting earlier in the day. We started after 10 and I think that made it more challenging. As a courtesy to others, pull off the stairs if you need a break (there’s plenty of space to rest). Good (but hard) stuff!

A great test of your strength and will! When I got to the top of the trail my legs were pretty shaky. Then I ran down the Barr trail and it took only a few mins to get down to the lot. Beautiful scenery! Lots if fun!

Lives up to its reputation! Awesome test of will! Watch out for ice (especially coming down).

Very grueling hike if you don't prepare yourself. A hike you should do after you have done some training. The mental reward at the top is very satisfying. Quite the accomplishment once you've completed the entire treck to the top.

Jodi says: This was my first time attempting this trail. I am a smoker of many years and new to getting out and going hiking. I found it very difficult to breath and only made it to the half way point. My husband and children however have successfully completed this hike several times. I will try to finish this again someday soon! The Barr Trail down was very nice and a whole lot easier then going up!
