Roxborough State Park South Rim Trail

Roxborough State Park: South Rim Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Roxborough State Park is a Colorado Natural Area and a National Natural Landmark. The park offers two main hiking areas: Fountain Valley and South Rim. Fountain Valley Trail has a dramatic trailhead and a big parking lot.

South Rim Trail has the same scenery and fewer people. The remarkable geology of this area is largely represented by the Fountain Formation. These red rocks jettison from the earth, erupting from the green valley."

Overall, a phenomenal trail! The bridge section of the trail was closed from the Willow Creek trailhead at the lower lot, so I started at the visitor center and hung a left at the fork for the willow creek trail so I could do the trail clockwise, which I highly recommend. This allows for viewing the fountain formations in front of you all the way on the descent and lets you gain all the elevation quickly at the beginning. Fall colors are beginning to show and trail is in excellent condition. Watch for bears! Plenty of scat around.

Hot day started at noon and left by 1:45. Path was clear throughout. Gradual incline up and down. It was just under 3 miles. Easy to moderate.
