Roxborough State Park Loops

Roxborough State Park Loops Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Roxborough State Park is a land of red rock slabs sticking up like upside-down spear points. The Fountain Valley Trail provides a close-up view of the rocks and the historic Persse Place.

The South Rim Trail circles Roxborough’s south end, winding through oakbrush past some of the huge rocks. Crossing over grasslands and past ponderosa pines, it ascends a ridge for an almost aerial view of the interesting rock formations. The geology is easy to see and examine from the rim. Skyscrapers to the north form a contrasting backdrop to the natural “buildings” of the tilted rocks."

"Given Roxborough State Park’s wealth of geologic features, its ecological diversity, and its scenic beauty, you might find it hard to believe that this unique area can be so close to Denver. But Roxborough State Park proves that natural wonders and large metropolitan areas can coexist. Not only has it been designated as a Colorado Natural Area, but it is a National Natural Landmark as well. Of the park’s five different hiking trails, the Fountain Valley Loop Trail cuts to the chase where these natural wonders are concerned."

"Walk through an area of unique beauty on a wide, gently sloped trail that is great for casual family outings. While natural history and geology hog all the attention at Roxborough State Park, the ground here is rich with artifacts that betray almost 10,000 years of human occupation."

Took 2 different trails while at Roxboroguh; first on Fountain Valley and second on Southern Rim. Fountain Valley was very nice and easy, with lots of good scenery, but not many animals. Did see some mule deer. Southern Rim was much more exciting. Saw fox, deer, elk and some eagles. It was a tougher hike, that went up to around 7K feet, but the views were amazing.
