John Martin Reservoir

John Martin Reservoir Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"An impoundment of the Arkansas River, John Martin Reservoir covers about 13,000 acres on the eastern Colorado sagebrush plains. Key Species: Saugeye, walleye, wiper, white bass, channel catfish, largemouth bass, rainbow trout. Early spring and late fall are the best times to fish this reservoir. The
primary forage fish is gizzard shad. Saugeye up to 20 inches have become increasingly common.

The best action is in May and early June along the dam or near any shoreline obstruction. Fish with minnows, Mister Twister grubs, or lead-head jigs tipped with a night crawler. Use a slow retrieval, the slower the better. Wipers run in the 15- to 22-inch range, with some larger ones caught every year."
