American Peak

American Peak Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"American Peak lies in the Gunnison National Forest roughly 14 miles southwest of Lake City. Though often overlooked by its larger and loftier neighbors, American Peak stands tall as the headstone of the beautiful American Basin southeast of Cinnamon Pass. In the summer months this basin is nothing short of spectacular, boasting expansive green, rolling alpine meadows surrounded by craggy ridgelines and dramatic peaks.

The crown jewel of this region is undoubtedly Handies Peak, a fourteener, which as such draws most of American Basin’s hiker traffic. In the winter as the San Juan snows pile up, this basin is transformed into a white wonderland, and access to its peaks becomes very difficult if not impossible."
