Vogel Canyon

Vogel Canyon Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"While the nearby Picket Wire Canyonlands offer a stunning contrast to the expansive plains that stretch south of La Junta, considerably smaller Vogel Canyon provides a more intimate break.

Graced by both natural beauty and relics of the past, this small canyon system is a real joy to visit. Four hiking trails have been established in Vogel Canyon; this hike follows the Canyon and Mesa Trails to complete a nice 2.25-mile loop."

This a beautiful spot. The canyon is lush and green and a sharp contrast to Picketwire Canyon, which is just a short distance away (and just down Vogel Canyon if you could go that way). The trails are excellent and easy-going, and there is a variety of habitats to see, from the old wagon train trails on the prairie to the green springs on the canyon floor. The reason I gave this area 4 stars instead of 5 is because it is somewhat touted as a spot to see rock art, but the simple fact is that what little there was has mostly been defaced. It's been cleaned up, but it is nearly impossible to do so without damaging the petroglyphs further. It's still worth visiting if you are in the area (especially on the way in or out of a day at Picketwire), or if you want a unique spot for a scenic picnic. Just don't expect rock art on the par of, say, Petroglyph Nat'l Monument in NM or even that which can be found with a little effort at Picketwire.
