St Mary’s Glacier and James Peak

St. Mary’s Glacier & James Peak Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This very climbable permanent snowfield, or glacier, with a spectacular setting is an easy drive from Denver. When it shrinks in the summer, trails go around it.

If you have an ice axe and know how to use it for self-arrest, you can have fun glissading on the snowfield. Don’t attempt it otherwise because it is easy to careen out of control onto the rocks and remove valuable brain cells or body parts."

Just a warning that the first part of the trail is very rocky and steep. We only went to the base of the glacier. Once you get past the rocks, it is fine, but they are tough. The area is beautiful and it is nice to be able to get close to the glacier. The toilets provided are taken care of, so it is worth the $5 to pay for the parking.

Great trail, beautiful glacier and lake. Just beware of the girl scout troops that will mow you down if you go in the middle of the day on a weekend.

Awesome beginner trail to the glacial lake... After that it gets much more challenging. Slippery rocks and snow. When I was up there it was a rather warm day for October but was still cold up near the lake and beyond. Great beginner hike to the glacier down right easy... P.S. you don't have to pay for parking just park on the side of the road.
