Lake Fork of the Gunnison River Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Lake Fork of the Gunnison River’s headwaters are south of Lake City near Redcloud and Handies Peaks. It flows north through canyons and steep valleys on the upper half, then through rolling ranch country below to Blue Mesa Reservoir.

Rainbow and brown trout from 10 to 18 inches are common the length of the river. About 35 miles of the Lake Fork parallel a public road, with eleven stretches of public access varying from a few hundred yards to 5 miles long. The access points are generally not well marked, and locals and government agencies use different names to describe them. Stop in a local fishing store and ask for a map. Two new public access areas are particularly promising. A 3-mile stretch of river upstream from the Red Bridge Campground, on Forest Road 25, has received extensive stream restoration work and has yearly reports of rapid population growth for both browns and rainbows."
