Gunnison Area Campgrounds Professional Review and Guide

"Like neighboring Montrose, Gunnison is not quite what most people expect, but it has something for everyone. Sandwiched between the harsh red cliffs at Curecanti and the fantastic mountain peaks surrounding Crested Butte, the town itself it almost anticlimactic. It seems to exist simply as a place to stop for gas and groceries or maybe a quick bite of pizza. But go beyond the edges of town for a taste of what Colorado is all about.

This guide contains information on 28 individual campgrounds in the Gunnison area."

I have lived in Colorado most of my life and never ventured into the Pitkin/Ohio City area. If you have an ATV this is a great place for day trips from a base camp. My young kids caught their first fish at the "kids only" fishing pond right outside of the town of Pitkin on the way to Tin Cup. Great Campgrounds and beautiful forests. Give yourself a couple of days just to hit the roads and see all the old mining towns.

Gateview Campground. Starts with a fantastic 8 mile drive thru a river canyon. The CG has about 6 sites. 1 is right on the river, the others are on a hill across the road. Not much shade at all, we camped in the river site and there are about 2 trees to block the sun. There is a nice trail that continues down river thru the canyon. The views from the CG are super. The river was so high, we could barely stick our legs in the water.
